Calling all young naturalists! The Junior Naturalist Program is a special environmental awareness program for our young park visitors, aged 7 through 14. Participants qualify for a Junior Naturalist certificate and badge by participating in five interpretive programs and completing one service project. This program for young naturalists is offered at most state parks and given special emphasis during the summer months.
As you visit in Arkansas State Parks, check with the park staff to see how to get started. Several parks offer special activities just for young naturalists who participate in this program! Watch for these on Program Schedules posted throughout the parks and monthly interpretive calendar on the Arkansas Parks & Tourism website.
Requirements
- Must be 7-14 years of age.
- Pick up Activity Card from park Visitor Center for recording activities.
- Attend five (5) interpretive programs (does not include recreational activities). For example, A Young Pioneer activity at the Ozark Folk Center State Park counts as one (1) interpretive program. Make sure the program leader knows you are there so you can get your activity card initialed at the end of the program.
- Complete one (1) service project. Any park interpreter will provide you with a special project to do while visiting the park. Have your card initialed when the project is complete.
- Turn in your completed card to the Visitor Center or park interpreter.
After receiving the Junior Naturalist badge and certificate, participants are encouraged to become an Arkansas State Parks Explorer. Check with the park staff to see how to get started.
